Gulou Food Beyond the Houhai Lake Tourist Traps
Skip the Houhai lakeside traps and eat in the real Gulou hutong, from Mr Shi's Dumplings on Gulou Dongdajie to craft beer in Doujiao Hutong.
Gulou Food Beyond the Houhai Lake Tourist Traps
Skip the Lakeside, Head for the Street
Eating in Gulou does not mean a meal on Houhai's east bank. That assumption costs you a disappointing evening. Every lakeside restaurant with laminated picture menus, neon signage, and a tout at the door serves cocktails above 80 CNY and food sized for a single pass-through. The real eating happens 50 metres east of the Drum Tower on Gulou Dongdajie, then deeper into the hutongs. Handwritten chalk menus and government sanitation grade A stickers tell you the kitchen is serious. Lunch stays under 50 CNY per person.
Houhai's east and south shores, plus the north shore of the lake, form a tourist bar zone. The failure case is predictable: a cocktail costs 60 to 120 CNY, a beer runs 40 to 80 CNY, and the food is reheated. Skip it. The two exceptions are the hutongs west of Houhai's north shore and the craft beer corridor between Gulou Dongdajie and Andingmen Neidajie. There the scene shifts from touts to brewers.
The East-West Street Kitchens
The Anchor Strip
Gulou Dongdajie is the anchor. From the Drum Tower, walk east 50 metres and you hit the densest cluster of reliable sit-down food in the area. Xianlaoman at number 252 serves sanxian jiaozi (pork, shrimp, and egg dumplings) for 25 to 45 CNY per plate of 12 to 15 pieces, daily from 11:00 to 21:30. That is your post-climb lunch within 100 metres of the tower. Old Beijing Noodle King at number 56 turns out zhajiangmian (fried sauce noodles) for 18 to 28 CNY per bowl, open 10:30 to 22:00 daily. For a cheaper noodle stop within 200 metres of the Drum Tower, Lanzhou Lamian at number 113 sells beef noodle soup for 15 to 22 CNY per bowl, open 07:00 to 23:00 daily. Queue at Xianlaoman or Old Beijing Noodle King at peak lunch? Lanzhou Lamian is the backup that never fails.
Beat the Drum Tower Queue
Breakfast before the 09:00 Drum Tower opening means Yaoji Chaogan at number 311, 80 metres east of the tower. The tower runs 09:00 to 17:00 April through October, 09:00 to 16:30 November through March, closed Mondays; 20 CNY adult, 10 CNY student or senior. A bowl of chaogan (stir-fried liver stew) costs 12 CNY, served from 06:00 to 21:00. Arrive at Yaoji by 08:30. Eat standing at the counter. You are at the ticket booth by 08:55.
Hutong Kitchens That Pass the Test
The Selection Rule
The rule for any hutong restaurant is simple. The menu is written on a wall or chalkboard in Chinese only. No English. At peak hour, at least 80 percent of the customers are local. A government sanitation grade sticker in the window must be A (blue) or B (green). Skip any place with a C (red) sticker. The per-person spend for lunch should stay under 50 CNY. These conditions filter out every tourist trap.
The Splurge and the Backups
Dali Courtyard at 67 Xiaojingchang Hutong, off the main drag, is the exception to the under-50 rule. Its Yunnan cooking justifies the jump to 120 to 180 CNY per person at dinner. Reserve for courtyard seating, especially on weekends. Open 11:30 to 14:00 and 17:30 to 22:00 daily. Cannot get a reservation? The backup is Fangzhuanchang 69 Zhajiangmian at 69 Fangzhuanchang Hutong. A bowl of zhajiangmian costs 18 CNY, served from 11:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:30 daily. It closes when it sells out. Arrive by 11:15 or 17:15.
Baochao Hutong holds two reliable spots. Toast at The Orchid at 65 Baochao Hutong serves Mediterranean and Middle Eastern brunch for 80 to 130 CNY per person, open 10:00 to 14:30 and 17:30 to 21:30 Tuesday through Sunday, closed Monday. Mr. Shi's Dumplings at number 74 offers 10 varieties of boiled dumplings for 40 to 70 CNY per person. Pork and fennel is the most popular. Open 11:00 to 14:30 and 17:00 to 21:00 daily. The failure case at Mr. Shi's is the 14:30 close for lunch; arrive by 13:30.

Houhai Bars Worth the Walk and the Craft Beer Corridor
The One Lakeside-Adjacent Bar
Great Leap Brewing #6 at 12 Doujiao Hutong, 300 metres west of Houhai's north shore, is the only lakeside-adjacent bar worth your time. A pint of Honey Ma Gold, a 5.2 percent ABV blonde ale, costs 35 to 55 CNY. Open 14:00 to 23:00 Sunday through Thursday, 14:00 to midnight Friday and Saturday. Do not arrive after 22:00 on a weekday; last call comes early.
East to the Brewers
Great Leap closed on Monday? Want another brewer? Walk 1.2 kilometres east of the Drum Tower to Slow Boat Brewery Taproom at 15 Dongsi Batiao. A pint of Monkey's Fist IPA (6.2 percent ABV) runs 30 to 50 CNY, open 16:00 to midnight Monday through Thursday, 14:00 to 01:00 Friday and Saturday, 14:00 to midnight Sunday. For an earlier start, Jing-A Brewpub at Longfusi Tower, 95 Longfusi Jie (1.5 kilometres southeast of the Drum Tower), pours Worker's Pale Ale (5.0 percent ABV) for 35 to 60 CNY per pint, open 11:30 to 23:00 Sunday through Thursday, 11:30 to midnight Friday and Saturday.
Late-Night Skewers
A night that runs past 01:00 ends at Beiluoguxiang BBQ at 52 Beiluoguxiang. Skewers cost 40 to 70 CNY per person, served 17:00 to 01:00 daily. Beiluoguxiang itself is the local alternative to Nanluoguxiang: fewer tourists, small noodle shops, and barbecue joints. Nanluoguxiang works for skewers at 10 to 25 CNY per stick and bubble tea. Skip its sit-down restaurants.
Common Questions
What is the one sign that a Gulou hutong restaurant is worth eating at?
A government sanitation grade A (blue) or B (green) sticker in the front window. A C (red) sticker means skip it. Combine that with a chalkboard menu in Chinese only and a local customer count above 80 percent at peak.
Where do I eat near the Drum Tower if every place on Gulou Dongdajie has a queue?
Walk 200 metres east to Lanzhou Lamian at 113 Gulou Dongdajie for a 15 to 22 CNY bowl of beef noodle soup. Open 07:00 to 23:00 daily, it is the reliable backup that never forms a line longer than five minutes.
Which Houhai bar should I avoid completely?
Any bar on Houhai's east or south shore with a tout at the door, a laminated picture menu, or neon signage. A cocktail there costs 60 to 120 CNY and the food is reheated. Walk west to Great Leap Brewing #6 instead.
What do I do if Great Leap Brewing #6 is closed on a Monday?
Walk 1.2 kilometres east to Slow Boat Brewery Taproom at 15 Dongsi Batiao, open 16:00 to midnight Monday through Thursday. Or walk 1.5 kilometres southeast to Jing-A Brewpub at Longfusi Tower, open 11:30 to 23:00 Sunday through Thursday.
