The Real-Name Booking Process for the Forbidden City, Step by Step

A step-by-step guide to the real-name Forbidden City booking process, including the WeChat mini-program and the exact failure points to avoid.

The Real Name Booking Process for the Forbidden City, Step by Step

You cannot outwit the Forbidden City ticket system with a third party site or an early morning walk up. The only official way is a WeChat mini program, and if you do not understand the flow before 7:59pm Beijing time seven days before your planned visit, you will get locked out. Here is the exact process, screen by screen, so you control the booking instead of reacting to error messages.

Opening the Mini Program

Open WeChat and search for the mini program called Palace Museum Tickets or 故宫博物院. The name you see depends on your phone language, but the icon is a red square with gold characters. Tap it. The first screen asks you to agree to real name registration. Tap agree. You cannot skip this.

Entering Passport Details

Now enter your passport number, full name exactly as it appears on your passport, nationality, and date of birth. Double check every character. The system rejects mismatches at payment stage, not at entry. If your passport name is two middle names and a hyphen, type all of it. If the system flags your entry and you back out to re enter, the mini program may freeze for thirty seconds. Wait it out. Pressing back again often logs you out entirely.

Choosing Date and Time

Select your visit date. The calendar shows green for available days, grey for sold out, and red for closed. The Forbidden City is closed every Monday except during Chinese national holidays. No ticket gets you in on a Monday. That is not negotiable.

Choose a time slot. Morning entry is 8:30am to 12:00pm. Afternoon entry is 12:00pm to 4:00pm. A ticket for either slot allows you to stay until closing at 5:00pm, but the afternoon slot means you cannot enter before noon. If you want the full empty courtyard experience, book morning and arrive by 8:15am. The security check queue on the way in takes anywhere from fifteen minutes to an hour, and your ticket does not bypass it.

Selecting Tickets and Submitting

Select the number of adult tickets. Children under 18 enter free but still require a reservation under their own passport. Senior discounts are for Chinese nationals only. Foreign visitors pay the full adult rate of 60 yuan in peak season, 40 yuan in low season. The mini program shows the price in yuan before you confirm.

Tap Submit Order. The screen spins and may show a loading icon for ten seconds. If it returns a message that says tickets are sold out, the entire day is gone. Do not refresh and try again for that date. The system does not release cancellations in real time. Your only option is a different day.

The 7 Day Advance Window and the 8pm Rush

Tickets open exactly seven calendar days before the visit date at 8:00pm Beijing time. For a Wednesday visit, tickets release the previous Wednesday at 8pm. For a Monday visit, tickets release a week before that Monday at 8pm. The Monday closure does not shift the booking window.

How Fast Tickets Disappear

During peak season, April through May and September through October, tickets vanish within thirty minutes of release. National Day week, the first week of October, is the worst. Tickets sell out in under ten minutes. During July and August, the heat drives crowds but tickets still sell within an hour. In winter, January and February, you can book a week ahead without rush and often find tickets still available the night before.

Payment Problems

Payment is the part where most foreign visitors fail. The mini program accepts WeChat Pay, Alipay, and Visa and Mastercard processed through a Chinese gateway. That gateway rejects foreign cards unpredictably. Have WeChat Pay topped up with yuan before you start. Ask a Chinese friend to transfer money into your WeChat wallet if you cannot link a foreign card. If the payment page shows an error in Chinese characters reading payment failed or transaction declined, do not exit. Tap the pay button again. Two resets usually work. If it fails a third time, you must restart the entire booking. The system does not hold your ticket during payment.

After Payment

Once payment succeeds, the mini program displays a QR code and a reservation number. Screenshot both. You need the QR code to enter the Forbidden City, not a printed ticket. The guards at the Meridian Gate scan the code from your phone. If your phone battery dies, there is no backup entry method. Carry a power bank.

Days Open, Security Checks, and What the Ticket Actually Gets You

The Forbidden City is open Tuesday through Sunday, 8:30am to 5:00pm with last entry at 4:00pm. Closed every Monday. Chinese public holidays override the Monday rule, but the website announces these exceptions only a month in advance. Do not assume a Monday in October is open just because National Day falls nearby.

Security Check Reality

Having a ticket does not exempt you from the security check queue on the way in. Every visitor passes through metal detectors and bag scanners at the Meridian Gate. Queues are longest between 9:00am and 10:30am. Arriving at 8:15am for the morning slot puts you near the front. Arriving at 3:30pm for the afternoon slot means you walk straight through. The security check is the same for all visitors, regardless of ticket type or nationality.

What Your Ticket Covers

Your admission covers the main palace halls, the inner court, the gardens, and most side galleries. The珍宝馆, Treasure Gallery, and钟表馆, Clock Gallery, require separate tickets that you can add to the same mini program booking. These cost 10 yuan each and sell out faster than the main ticket. Book them at the same time as your entry ticket. You cannot add them later if they sell out.

Walking from the Meridian Gate to the northern exit at the Gate of Divine Might takes about 45 minutes without stopping. With stops to read signs, take photographs, and sit in the shaded corridors, budget three to four hours. That is without the Treasure Gallery or the Clock Gallery. Add another ninety minutes for both.
