Which Beijing Railway Station Your Train Actually Leaves From

You are standing at the wrong Beijing railway terminal. Your bags are between your feet, your passport is in your hand, and your train to Shanghai leaves in 35 minutes from a departure point 40 minutes away by metro. This is the classic Beijing rail mistake, and it costs people their tickets every day. Beijing has five mainline high speed terminals, and sending yourself to the wrong one is the single most common transport error in the city. Know which one you need, how to get there, and how to fix it if you picked wrong.

Beijing South (北京南站, Běijīng Nán Zhàn) handles the eastern corridor. If your destination is Tianjin, Shanghai, or Nanjing, this is your terminal. Metro Line 4 and Line 14 both stop here. Exit B or C puts you closest to security. Door to boarding gate minimum time is 15 minutes with no bags and a ticket ready. Food is on B1 and F2: KFC, McDonald's, Yoshinoya, local noodle shops. Bag storage is on B1 near the metro exit; the 2024 rate was about ¥10-20 per item per day. The taxi rank on B1 and B2 has a queue of 5-15 minutes off peak, 20-40 minutes at peak. Beijing South does not serve Xi'an, Chengdu, or Hong Kong. If your ticket says those, you need Beijing West.

Beijing West (北京西站, Běijīng Xī Zhàn) is the western and southern corridor. It serves Xi'an, Chengdu, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong via the Beijing-Guangzhou HSR. Metro Line 7 and Line 9 reach it. Door to boarding gate takes a minimum of 25 minutes because the walk from metro to the waiting hall is longer than at any other terminal. Taxi here is the worst in the city: the queue on the north and south plaza B1 levels runs 30-60 minutes typical, 60-90 minutes at peak. Food is in the waiting hall and plazas: KFC, McDonald's, Kung Fu, convenience stores. Bag storage is on the north plaza B1 and south plaza, same ¥10-20 per item per day ballpark. Do not arrive at Beijing West for a train to Tianjin. That is a Beijing South departure.

Beijing South vs Beijing West Station

The confusion between Beijing South (北京南站) and Beijing West (北京西站) is the most common rail error in the city. Both are enormous. Both have the word for a cardinal direction in their name. But the trains they serve do not overlap.

Which Terminal Serves Which Corridor

Beijing South handles the Beijing-Shanghai high speed railway. Destinations include Tianjin (30 minutes), Shanghai (4.5 hours), Nanjing, and the entire eastern corridor. Beijing West handles the Beijing-Guangzhou high speed railway. Destinations include Xi'an (3.5 hours), Chengdu (7.5 hours), Guangzhou (8 hours), and Hong Kong (8.5 hours).

If you booked a train to Xi'an, you go to Beijing West. If you booked a train to Shanghai, you go to Beijing South. There is no crossover. If you arrive at the wrong one, the metro transfer is Line 4 to Line 7 via Cai Shikou interchange, taking 35-45 minutes door to door. With bags and peak crowds, budget 90 minutes minimum to make the switch. That is almost always longer than your remaining time before departure, because gates close 5 minutes before the train leaves and there is no refund for a missed high speed ticket.

Why Not Take A Taxi

The taxi transfer between these two terminals is not faster. The roads around Beijing West are chronically congested, and a taxi from Beijing South to Beijing West can take 45-70 minutes depending on time of day. Use the metro. It is faster and more predictable.

Beijing Chaoyang Station Trains

Beijing Chaoyang (北京朝阳站, Běijīng Cháoyáng Zhàn) is the newest of the five, opened to relieve pressure on the older terminals. It serves the north east corridor: Chengde (2 hours), Shenyang (2.5 hours), and Harbin (5 hours). This is the departure point for the Chengde Mountain Resort day trip.

Metro Line 3 reaches Beijing Chaoyang. Door to boarding gate minimum is approximately 20 minutes. Bag storage is available but details on exact location and pricing are not consistently published. Food is limited to small outlets and convenience stores. The taxi rank has a typical queue of 10-20 minutes.

The critical thing about Beijing Chaoyang is that it does not serve the Great Wall, does not serve Shanghai, and does not serve Xi'an. If you are heading to Chengde, use this terminal. If you are heading anywhere else, you are probably at the wrong one. Transfer to Beijing Station via Metro Line 3 to Line 2 at Dongsi Shitiao interchange, 30-40 minutes door to door.

Beijing North Station Badaling

Beijing North (北京北站, Běijīng Běi Zhàn) is the terminal you need for the Great Wall at Badaling. The Badaling section is reached via the Beijing-Zhangjiakou HSR, and trains depart from Beijing North to Yanqing (Badaling stop) in about 25 minutes. This terminal also serves Zhangjiakou and Hohhot.

Beijing North does not have its own metro stop. You reach it via Xizhimen Station, which is connected by an underground passage. Xizhimen serves Metro Line 2, Line 4, and Line 13. The transfer through the passage takes about 10 minutes, then door to boarding gate is about 20 minutes total. Bag storage is limited to a small counter near the waiting hall. Food is also limited: a convenience store and small food stalls. Taxi pick up is at the Xizhimen transport hub, queue 10-20 minutes typical.

The Badaling trains from Beijing North are frequent but they sell out, especially on weekends and during peak season (April-May and September-October). Book your ticket in advance through the official rail app. If you miss the train, the next one may be 1-2 hours later. Do not confuse Beijing North with Beijing Station. They are on the same metro line (Line 2) but in opposite directions: Beijing North is at Xizhimen, Beijing Station is at its own eponymous stop on Line 2.

Beijing Railway Station Confusion

The naming is the trap. Beijing Station (北京站, Běijīng Zhàn, also called the Main Station) is the oldest and most central. It serves conventional trains plus some high speed to Harbin, Shenyang, Ulaanbaatar, Moscow, and Pyongyang. But for most visitors, Beijing Station is not where you want to be. The high speed trains that tourists actually use depart from the other four terminals.

Beijing Fengtai (北京丰台站, Běijīng Fēngtái Zhàn) is the fifth. It handles conventional and an increasing share of high speed services to Taiyuan, Zhengzhou, and Shanghai that used to leave from Beijing West. Metro Line 10 and Line 16 reach it. Door to boarding gate is about 20 minutes. Food and bag storage are limited. The taxi queue is 10-20 minutes typical.

The confusion comes from Beijing Station sounding like the default. It is not. If your ticket says Beijing Station, you are going to the old central terminal. If it says Beijing South, Beijing West, Beijing North, Beijing Chaoyang, or Beijing Fengtai, you are going to a specific other terminal. Check your ticket before you leave your hotel. Do not assume the name on your ticket matches the terminal you walked to last time.

Specific Routes: Great Wall, Tianjin, Shanghai, Xi’an, Chengde, Datong

These six destinations cover the most common trips from Beijing. Each one uses a specific terminal.

Great Wall (Badaling)

Depart from Beijing North. Train time is approximately 25 minutes to Badaling. Book ahead through the official rail app. The terminal is reached via Xizhimen metro stop, Lines 2, 4, and 13. Allow 20 minutes from metro exit to boarding gate.

Tianjin

Depart from Beijing South. Train time is 30-35 minutes. Trains run every 10-20 minutes during peak hours. Metro Lines 4 and 14. Door to boarding gate 15 minutes. This is the easiest day trip in the Beijing region.

Shanghai

Depart from Beijing South. Train time is 4.5 hours on the fastest trains. Metro Lines 4 and 14. Door to boarding gate 15 minutes. Some Shanghai services also depart from Beijing Fengtai, so check your ticket. If your ticket says Fengtai, do not go to Beijing South.

Xi'an

Depart from Beijing West. Train time is 3.5 hours. Metro Lines 7 and 9. Door to boarding gate 25 minutes. This is the longest minimum walk of any terminal, so arrive 45-60 minutes before departure if you are unfamiliar with the layout.

Chengde

Depart from Beijing Chaoyang. Train time is 2 hours. Metro Line 3. Door to boarding gate about 20 minutes. This is the only terminal for the Chengde Mountain Resort.

Datong

Datong is served by trains from both Beijing North and Beijing Fengtai, depending on the service. Check your ticket. The high speed trains from Beijing North take about 2 hours. From Beijing Fengtai, conventional services take longer. Do not guess.

Transfer Between Stations When You Go Wrong

If you arrive at the wrong terminal, the metro is your only realistic option. Taxis are slower and unpredictable. The minimum transfer time between any two terminals is 60 minutes by metro with no bags and off peak, or 90 minutes with bags and during peak hours. Gates close 5 minutes before departure. There is no refund or exchange for a missed standard high speed ticket.

The specific metro routes: Beijing South to Beijing West takes 35-45 minutes via Line 4 to Line 7 at Cai Shikou. Beijing South to Beijing Station takes 25-35 minutes via Line 4 to Line 2 at Xuanwumen. Beijing West to Beijing Station takes 35-50 minutes via Line 7 to Line 5 to Line 2 at Ci Qikou, or by taxi. Beijing North to Beijing Station is the easiest: Line 2 direct, 25-30 minutes. Beijing Chaoyang to Beijing Station takes 30-40 minutes via Line 3 to Line 2 at Dongsi Shitiao. Beijing Fengtai to Beijing West takes 20-30 minutes via Line 10 to Line 9 at Liuliqiao.

If you have less than 60 minutes before your train departs, you will not make it. Accept the loss and buy a new ticket for a later departure. The ticket office at any terminal can help, but expect a queue. You can also rebook on the official rail app if you have it set up.

Security, Tickets, and Timing

Every terminal has the same procedure: X ray baggage scan and walk through metal detector at the entrance, then a ticket and passport check at the waiting hall entrance. Foreign passports are checked at a dedicated manual lane, not e gates, so you cannot use the domestic ID card lanes. This adds time.

Gate numbers are displayed on your ticket and on the large screens in the waiting hall. The gate closes 5 minutes before departure for high speed trains. If you arrive after the gate closes, you cannot board. There is no refund. The recommended arrival time is 45-60 minutes before departure for first time users or during peak periods, and 30 minutes for experienced travellers off peak with no bags.

Carry your passport at all times. It is your ticket. Without it, you cannot enter the terminal, pass security, or board the train. The same passport is required for entry to Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the National Museum, and many parks, so keep it on your person.
