The metro is the only option that reliably gets you across this city in a predictable time, and you will be stranded at a ticket machine if you arrive without the right payment method. Before you leave the airport, set up a WeChat or Alipay transport QR code. No Chinese phone number? Buy a Yang Cheng Tong card at any customer service counter. It costs a CNY 20 deposit. Cash is not accepted at metro ticket machines. This is the single friction point that stops new arrivals cold.

Navigating The Network

Bilingual signage is present on every line and in every stop, so navigation is not the problem. The problem is that the scale of the system is larger than it looks on the map. Guangzhou Metro operates 16 lines plus the APM line, covering 652.8 km as of 2024. Interchanges between lines involve long underground walks. Tiyu Xilu interchange and Zhujiang New Town both require corridors that take three to five minutes to walk end to end. Count the walking time into your journey planning, not just the train time.

Beyond 48 km costs CNY 14. The journey from Baiyun Airport to Zhujiang New Town, a distance of about 35 km, costs roughly CNY 8 to CNY 10. The journey from Guangzhou South Railway Station to Gongyuanqian, about 17 km, costs around CNY 6.

Late Night And Taxis

Last train times vary by line, stop, and direction. From central locations they run between 23:00 and 23:40. Miss the last train and Didi ride hailing is available citywide. A 10 km ride costs CNY 25 to CNY 40. Taxis have a flagfall of CNY 12 for the first 3 km and then charge CNY 2.6 per km. Most taxi drivers speak little to no English, so have your destination written in Chinese on your phone screen.

Guangzhou Transport Card: Yang Cheng Tong vs Phone QR Codes

The Yang Cheng Tong card is a contactless stored value card accepted on the metro, buses, ferries, some taxis, and some shops. It costs a CNY 20 deposit that you get back when you return the card. Top it up at any ticket machine or customer service counter. It does not require a Chinese phone number, which makes it the simpler option for a short visit.

Setting Up Phone Payment

The WeChat transport QR code and the Alipay transport QR code are accepted at all metro gates. Scan the code on the gate reader to enter and scan again to exit. To set these up, open the WeChat or Alipay app, search for the Guangzhou Metro mini program, link it to your payment method, and generate the transport QR code. Do this before you reach the gate. The mini program requires a Chinese phone number for SMS verification. If you do not have one, buy a Yang Cheng Tong card instead.

Guangzhou Public Transit: Which Mode Wins by Situation

The metro beats taxis for north south river crossings at rush hour. Road bridges and tunnels on the Pearl River clog badly between 08:00 and 09:30 and again from 17:30 to 19:30. A taxi from the old city centre in Yuexiu to Tianhe CBD can take 40 minutes in normal traffic and well over an hour in peak conditions. The same trip from Gongyuanqian to Zhujiang New Town takes 25 to 30 minutes on the metro. The river is the bottleneck, and the metro crosses it on dedicated track.

Ferries And Bikes

River ferries run by Guangzhou Liner Company cost CNY 1 to CNY 2 for standard crossings. Use the Fangcun to Huangsha to Xidi to Haizhu Square area for sightseeing. The water bus costs CNY 2 to CNY 5 depending on route and runs a sightseeing route from Canton Tower to Haixinsha to the Zhujiang New Town waterfront. The water bus is not a commuter tool. Use it for scenery, not speed.

Bike share is available from Meituan Bike, Hellobike, and Qingju at roughly CNY 1.5 per 30 minutes. It works for short trips in Liwan and Yuexiu where the streets are arcaded and the blocks are short. It does not work in Tianhe where the roads are wide, the blocks are long, and the pedestrian interest is low. Do not bike across the river unless you know the bridge cycle lanes, which are narrow and not continuous.

Baiyun Airport to City: Metro Line 3 is the Default

Metro Line 3 runs from Baiyun Airport to Tiyu Xilu and central stops in about 40 to 50 minutes for CNY 7 to CNY 10. The North Extension of Line 3 connects the terminal to the main line. From Guangzhou East Railway Station to Airport North takes about 35 to 40 minutes. From Zhujiang New Town to Airport North takes about 50 to 55 minutes. Take the metro. It is cheaper and more predictable because road traffic to the airport can add 25 minutes.

Taxis And Alternatives

An airport taxi from the city centre takes 45 to 70 minutes depending on traffic and costs roughly CNY 120 to CNY 180. Airport express buses are available from major hotels and stations but run on less frequent schedules. Arrive after the last metro leaves the airport, around 23:00, and you need a taxi. There is no night bus that covers the same route with the same frequency.

Shenzhen Bao'an Airport is an alternative entry point but requires a 1.5 to 2.5 hour onward journey by high speed rail or coach. Consider it only if you are combining Guangzhou with Shenzhen and the flight into Shenzhen saves you more than two hours of total travel time.
