That is long enough for the seat to vanish. An award hold is the bridge between finding the seat and committing your miles. It reserves the seat and locks the price without ticketing it, giving you time to shift points and complete the booking.

How Long Each Programme Will Hold an Award for You

Not every airline lets you hold an award seat. Some programmes push you straight to ticketing. Others give you a window, but the length depends on the programme, your elite status, and how close the departure date is. The Programmes That Cannot Be Held

If you found the seat on Avianca LifeMiles, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, Delta SkyMiles, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, Qantas Frequent Flyer, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, or Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles, you cannot put it on hold. You must move the points first, then book immediately. The risk is that the seat disappears while the transfer processes. To reduce that risk, send a small test amount first to confirm the accounts link. Then move the full balance and book within seconds of it arriving.

The Programmes That Let You Transfer After Booking

Aeroplan, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Alaska Mileage Plan, American Airlines AAdvantage, ANA Mileage Club, British Airways Executive Club, United MileagePlus, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club all allow holds. The Risk You Take with Any Hold

A hold is not a guarantee. Some programmes, especially those with dynamic pricing, cancel holds without notice if the last seat in that fare class is sold to a cash customer or claimed by another member. This is rare. But it happens. The closer you are to departure, the higher the probability. If the seat is the only award seat left on that flight and the flight is within two weeks, book immediately with whatever miles you have. Do not wait for a bank transfer. Pay the close-in booking fee if one applies. A held seat that disappears at 1am while you wait for a Chase transfer to post is a seat you will not get back.

The single thing that most often goes wrong: you assume the hold is a lock and wait until the final hour to move points.
