You found a business class award from New York to Tokyo for 60,000 miles. You clicked book. The site paused. Then it said the fare was no longer available. That seat, that price, that route was gone in the three minutes it took your bank to process a point transfer. That is the world of award tickets. The rules around modifying and cancelling those tickets are just as unforgiving, and they shifted sharply after 2020. Many old blog posts still cite the old rules. This page gives you the current numbers for the four programmes that matter most: United MileagePlus, American AAdvantage, Air Canada Aeroplan, and Air France KLM Flying Blue.

Two Different Actions, Two Different Costs

Modifying an award ticket means keeping the same record locator and moving to a different date or flight. You pay a modification fee, and you pay any fare difference if the new award costs more miles. Cancelling an award means returning all the miles to your account and getting the taxes and fees refunded. You pay a cancellation fee. The key distinction: a modification avoids the cancellation step entirely. That matters when you only want to shift by a few days and the new award costs the same or fewer miles.

On partner awards, the rules are different. Most programmes do not allow modifications on partner tickets at all. You must cancel and return the miles, paying the cancellation fee, then start a new booking. That means the timing risk is higher. If the partner space disappears during your cancellation, you lose the seat entirely.

The Big Four Policies at a Glance

United MileagePlus

United has no modification fee on its own metal awards since 2020. Move dates or flight numbers at no charge. You pay any increase in miles if the new award is more expensive. If it costs fewer miles, United does not refund the difference. On partner awards, modifications are not allowed. Cancel and pay a cancellation fee per ticket for non elites. That fee is waived for MileagePlus Premier 1K and Global Services members. If United cancels your flight or alters the schedule by more than two hours, the cancellation fee is waived and you can cancel for a full refund of miles and taxes.

American AAdvantage

American also eliminated modification fees on its own award tickets in 2020. Same rule: no fee to alter the date or flight, but you pay any difference in miles if the new award is higher. If the new award is lower, no refund. Partner awards have no modification option. Cancel, pay a cancellation fee per ticket for non elites, and get your miles back. AAdvantage Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro members get the cancellation fee waived. The cancellation window closes at departure. If you no show, you forfeit all miles and taxes with no refund.

Air Canada Aeroplan

Aeroplan introduced a flat fee structure in 2020 that varies by region. Modifying a North American award costs less than modifying an international award. Cancelling costs the same amounts. The miles return to your account. If the new award costs fewer miles, the difference is refunded. Partners follow the same modification and cancellation rules as Aeroplan metal. Elite members get discounts: Aeroplan 50K and above pay no fee for modifications and cancellations on most awards. Close in booking fees apply within 21 days of departure for non elites.

Air France KLM Flying Blue

Flying Blue charges a flat fee for modifications and a flat fee for cancellations on most award tickets. Modifications are allowed on Flying Blue metal and on partner awards. If you cancel, the miles return to your account and the fee is deducted from the taxes and fees refund. If the taxes and fees are less than the cancellation fee, you owe the difference. Flying Blue does not charge a close in booking fee. No show forfeits everything. Flying Blue Gold and Platinum members pay no fee for modifications and cancellations on awards booked with their own miles.

When the Airline Changes Your Plans

If the airline cancels your flight or alters the schedule by more than 60 to 120 minutes depending on the programme, you have rights. United and American will rebook you on their own metal at no cost. Aeroplan and Flying Blue will do the same. If you prefer to cancel, all four programmes will return your miles and refund taxes and fees with zero penalty. Know this number: a schedule shift of 120 minutes or more triggers this protection at most programmes. Some trigger at 90 minutes. Save your original booking confirmation email with the times. It is your proof.

The failure case: you see a schedule alteration of 45 minutes. The airline does not offer a waiver. You want to cancel anyway. You pay the standard cancel fee. Do not assume a small adjustment gives you free cancellation. It usually does not.
