The mechanism is simple once you see the structure. United MileagePlus lets you add a free one way inside a single region when your overall award starts in one region and ends in another. The free flight must be entirely within one of those regions. It cannot cross into a different zone. Book it as one multi city ticket on the United website using the Excursionist Perk checkbox that appears during the search. If the routing qualifies, the base miles price for the free portion shows as zero. How to Build a Worked Itinerary Step by Step

Start on the United website. Select the Multi City search option. Enter three flights in order. Flight one: your home city to the long haul destination, for example New York to Tokyo. Flight two: a separate trip inside the same region as your long haul destination, for example Tokyo to Okinawa and back, or Tokyo to Seoul and back. Flight three: your long haul return, Tokyo back to New York. The critical rule is that flight two must be entirely within the same region as the long haul destination. If you fly from New York to Tokyo, the extra journey must be inside Asia. If you fly from New York to London, it must be inside Europe. You will still see the miles for the first and third flights at the standard saver or standard level. Why This Technique Survives While Others Died

United removed stopovers on award tickets in October 2016. That move closed the older free one way method where you would place a stopover at your home city on the return of an international round trip and use it months later. American Airlines removed stopovers in April 2014. Delta removed them in January 2015. The Excursionist Perk is not a stopover. If you need a specific partner flight for the regional trip, you cannot use this perk.

For the traveller who flies once a year and wants a cheap domestic trip, this technique is not worth the effort.
