Future World or the Touring Exhibition at ArtScience Museum: Which Ticket to Pick

This single scene at Future World's Sketch Aquarium is the ArtScience Museum experience in miniature.

The museum runs two parallel products under one lotus shaped roof by architect Moshe Safdie. There is Future World, the permanent teamLab digital art space that opened on 12 March 2016. And there are the touring shows that rotate in and out of the other gallery spaces every three to six months. You do not buy a single ticket to the building. You buy a ticket to Future World, a separate ticket to a touring show, or a combination. Which you choose depends on who you are travelling with and how much time you have.

What Future World Actually is and Who Should Skip it

For Kids, a Digital Playground

Future World is a digital art playground. teamLab designed it for families and children. The 1,500 square metre space contains 16 installations. Crystal Universe, a room of suspended LED lights, is the most photographed spot in the building. Three installations are better experienced than photographed: Black Waves, an immersive projection room with a soundscape; Sliding through the Fruit Field, an interactive slide that requires physical participation; and Sketch Aquarium, where you colour a drawing and watch it swim onto a projected ocean.

If you have kids aged three to twelve, Future World works. Plan for 60 to 90 minutes inside and budget for sticker shock at the gift shop on the way out.

Adults Without Kids: Skip It

If you are an adult travelling without children, skip Future World. The content is thin for the price. Adults who go in expecting the scale of teamLab Borderless Tokyo (10,000 square metres, opened February 2024 at Azabudai Hills) or teamLab Planets Tokyo (also 10,000 square metres, in Toyosu) will be disappointed. Future World is a fraction of the size and a fraction of the ambition. The lower ticket price reflects this, but the experience does not justify a dedicated trip from the other side of Marina Bay unless you are accompanying a child.

Adults without kids should check what touring show is on during their dates and make the call based on that, not on Future World alone.

The Touring Exhibitions Are the Real Draw for Adults

The ArtScience Museum operates 21 gallery spaces totalling 6,000 square metres. Future World occupies only a quarter of that floor area. The rest hosts a rotating programme of touring shows that change every three to six months. At any given time you will find two to three concurrent shows.

These have ranged from major blockbusters on the science of Pixar animation to deep dives into ancient Egyptian artefacts. The quality and ambition are higher than Future World. A touring show takes 45 to 60 minutes to walk through. A full visit covering all shows on offer runs 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

Before you book, open the museum's website and look at the exhibitions tab. If a touring show aligns with your interests, buy a ticket to that show and skip Future World entirely. If you want to see everything, buy combination tickets for two to four shows. Go in knowing that Future World is the weakest link in the bundle.

Booking Mechanics and the Mistake Most Visitors Make

Buy your tickets online before you arrive. The museum is operated by Marina Bay Sands, and the official ticket portal is where you book. Weekends and school holidays see queues peak between 11:00 and 15:00. The quietest windows are weekday mornings from 10:00 to 11:00 and weekday late afternoons from 16:00 to 18:00.

The mistake most visitors make is buying a ticket to Future World because they heard of teamLab, arriving excited, and finding themselves done in under an hour with nothing else to do. Do not be that visitor. Check the touring schedule for your dates. If nothing grabs you, consider whether the museum is worth your time at all.

The nearest MRT station is Bayfront on the Circle Line and Downtown Line, Exit D. The museum is a five minute walk through the Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. Budget for air conditioning along the way. Singapore's heat is relentless between 11am and 3pm, and the walk from the station is covered but still warm.

What to Skip and What is Nearby

The Gift Shop and the Gardens

Skip the gift shop unless you have a child who needs a souvenir. The prices are high and the merchandise is the same teamLab branded stock sold in Tokyo and Macao.

Skip Future World entirely if your itinerary already includes Gardens by the Bay's Cloud Forest and Supertree Grove. The digital spectacle at Gardens by the Bay is more impressive, free to view (the Supertree light show runs nightly at 7:45pm and 8:45pm), and does not require a ticket unless you enter the cooled conservatories.

After Your Visit

Exit through the Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands and walk five minutes to the Supertree Grove for the free light show. Or take the underpass from Bayfront MRT to the Promenade and catch a view of the Singapore skyline from the Helix Bridge. Both are better uses of an evening than returning to the museum.
