You land. You have bags. You need to be somewhere inside the 4th Ring Road. The answer is not the same for Beijing Capital (PEK) and Beijing Daxing (PKX). For PEK: take the Airport Express to Dongzhimen, 25 minutes, ¥25, then transfer to the metro or grab a taxi. For PKX: take the Daxing Airport Express to Caoqiao, 20 minutes, ¥35, then metro or taxi. Getting from Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) to Central Beijing

Taxi From PEK: The Straightforward Option With a Queue

PEK is closer than Daxing. It is still 26 kilometres northeast of the city centre. In light traffic, a taxi gets you to Dongcheng or Chaoyang in 45 minutes. In heavy traffic, that becomes 70 minutes. The fare runs ¥100 to ¥150. Have your destination written in Chinese characters. Drivers rarely speak English. They may refuse short fares. If you arrive between 23:00 and 05:30, taxis apply a surcharge and the Airport Express has stopped running.

Airport Express: Fast, Fixed, and It Stops at 22:30

The Airport Express runs from PEK to Dongzhimen station. Journey time is a fixed 25 minutes. Cost is ¥25. Trains start around 06:00 and stop around 22:30. At Dongzhimen, you transfer to Metro Line 2 (the loop line) or exit to the street for a taxi. The transfer walk inside Dongzhimen station takes about 5 minutes. Long escalators, no elevator shortcuts.

Metro connections from Dongzhimen get you to most central areas. Line 2 loops around the old city. One stop west gets you to Yonghegong (Lama Temple area). Two stops south gets you to Dongsi and Jianguomen. If you are staying in Haidian or far west Beijing, expect 45 to 60 minutes on the metro after you transfer. Single-ticket machines exist. Queues are long. You need a Beijing transport card (Yikatong) or an Alipay transport QR code. The metro stops running around 22:30 to 23:00 depending on the line. Miss the last Airport Express and your options shrink to taxi or Didi.

Didi From PEK: Same Cost, No Queue

Didi rides from PEK to central Beijing cost roughly the same as taxis, ¥100 to ¥150. The app works with a foreign phone number if you have a working SIM. The interface is Chinese. Have your destination address in Chinese characters pasted into the note field. Didi drivers also rarely speak English.

Real friction points for PEK: The taxi queue outside Arrivals can hit 30 minutes at peak hours (late afternoon, Sunday evenings). The Airport Express stops running at 22:30. If your flight arrives after 21:30, you are gambling on making the last train. The metro transfer at Dongzhimen adds 5 to 15 minutes of walking underground. None of this is impossible. All of it is real.

Getting from Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX) to Central Beijing

Daxing Airport Express: The Main Rail Link

Daxing opened in 2019. It is massive, modern, and located 46 kilometres south of central Beijing. This is not a minor detail. Everything takes longer from Daxing. The Daxing Airport Express runs to Caoqiao station. Journey time is 20 minutes. Cost is ¥35. At Caoqiao, you transfer to Metro Line 10 (the outer loop line). Line 10 connects to Line 4, Line 5, and Line 1 at various stations. Your total metro time from Daxing to Dongcheng or Chaoyang is roughly 60 to 80 minutes including the transfer.

There is a second metro option starting from Daxing Airport. Line Daxing Airport Express also has a stop at Lize Business District station, which gets you closer to the south-west parts of the city. Use this if you are staying in Fengtai or near Beijing West Railway Station. Otherwise, Caoqiao remains the main transfer point.

The Daxing Airport Express also stops running around 22:30. Same constraint as PEK. Miss it, and you are looking at a taxi or Didi.

Taxi and Didi From Daxing: Double the Fare

Taxi from Daxing to central Beijing costs around ¥200. Journey time is 60 minutes with no traffic. With traffic, expect 80 to 90 minutes. The distance is long enough that some drivers will use the airport expressway toll road. That adds a small fee, usually ¥10 to ¥15. Didi from Daxing costs ¥180 to ¥220. Same caveats about Chinese-character addresses and English ability apply.

Real friction points for Daxing: The distance. If you are staying in Haidian or Shijingshan, add another 20 minutes to your metro time. The taxi fare is double what you pay from PEK. The airport is so far south that you will not really feel like you have arrived in Beijing until you have crossed the 4th Ring Road. Choose Daxing only if your airline flies there, your accommodation is south of the centre, or you have no choice.

The table below shows the fastest route from each airport to Dongcheng district (roughly the Forbidden City area) using public transport. Taxi times and costs assume no traffic, which is rare during weekday peaks.

Two Options That Feel Fast but Have Catch-22s

Airport Express from either airport is the fastest public transport option. But it stops at 22:30. If your flight lands at 21:00, you can make it through immigration and baggage claim by 21:45, walk to the train platform by 22:00, and catch the 22:15 train. That gives you a 15-minute buffer. If your flight lands at 21:30, you are cutting it too close. Take a taxi and accept the cost.

Didi is not faster than a taxi. It is sometimes cheaper, sometimes more expensive. The real advantage is that you order it from a screen and do not queue. The real disadvantage is that the app interface is entirely in Chinese unless you switch it to English, and even then the driver communication stays in Chinese. Paste your hotel name and address in Chinese characters into the note field. Have the hotel phone number ready. The driver will call it if they cannot find you.

The One Thing That Trips Up Every Traveller

You need a working payment method before you leave the arrivals hall. Cash is nearly useless in Beijing. Vendors expect Alipay or WeChat Pay. Foreign cards fail unpredictably even where accepted. Set up Alipay before you fly. Link your foreign card. Test it. If you cannot, carry ¥200 in cash to buy your Airport Express ticket and a metro card. That will get you to your hotel. Then fix the payment situation before you go anywhere else.
