A Day in China Costs Less Than You Think, but Not in the Way You Expect

Most first time visitors budget for China as if it is Tokyo or London. It is not. A day in the capital, Xi'an or the eastern metropolis costs roughly the same as a day in Bangkok or Mexico City, once you know where your money goes. The hard part is not the total. It is that cash is useless, train tickets require your passport, and no map app works without a VPN set up before you leave. The numbers below are concrete and route specific. Use them to plan, not to guess.

Shoestring: CNY 250 to 450 Per Day

Where To Sleep

You sleep in a hostel dorm bed for CNY 50 to 120. In the capital, book a bed at a Dongcheng hostel near the Forbidden City or in a Chaoyang backpacker house. In Xi'an, stay inside the walled old city near the Bell Tower. In the coastal city, dorm beds cluster around the Former French Concession and the Bund.

Eating And Getting Around

You eat street food for breakfast and lunch. A jianbing crepe costs CNY 10 to 30. Xi'an biangbiang noodles from a stall cost the same. For dinner, a casual restaurant meal runs CNY 30 to 60. You drink tap water or buy bottled water at CNY 2 to 4. You ride the metro. A single fare costs CNY 2 to 10. You walk or use a shared bike for short trips. You skip taxis.

Sights And The One Big Spend

For sightseeing, budget CNY 40 to 120 per major sight. The Forbidden City general admission is within that range. The Terracotta Army ticket is similar. Mutianyu Great Wall entry plus cable car goes higher. If you buy a Maglev ticket at CNY 50 from the airport, that is your single biggest transport spend for the day.

The failure case: you arrive at a train station without the Alipay or WeChat Pay app set up. Cash is refused at the ticket window. You cannot board. Sort your payment method before you arrive.

Midrange: CNY 600 to 1,000 Per Day

Hotels And Meals

You stay in a mid range hotel double room for CNY 300 to 600. In the capital, look in Chaoyang near the metro. Book Rail Early

Your biggest variable is high speed rail between cities. A second class ticket from the capital to the eastern metropolis costs CNY 553 to 662. That is a single leg, not a daily cost. Spread it over the days of your trip.

The failure case: you try to book a high speed train on the day of travel during peak months. Seats sell out. Book on the official railway app at least two weeks ahead for April, May, September and October. Have your passport number ready.

In Xi'an, the Bell Tower area is where the top international hotels sit.

Food, Drink And Taxis

You eat mid range restaurant meals for two at CNY 120 to 250 for lunch and dinner, or you go higher at a dedicated roast duck restaurant where a full Beijing kaoya meal runs CNY 200 to 400 for two. You drink coffee at CNY 25 to 45, local beer at CNY 10 to 30, and bottled water at CNY 2 to 4. You take taxis everywhere. A 10 km ride costs CNY 40 to 50.

Private Car And The Wall

You book a private car for the 1.5 to 2 hour trip to Mutianyu Great Wall instead of a tourist bus. You pay the major sight admissions of CNY 40 to 120 without worry. You buy the Maglev ticket at CNY 50 for the 8 minute ride from the airport.

The failure case: you expect hotel concierge English and western style service in smaller Xi'an hotels. Staff speak limited English. Have a translation app and your destination written in Chinese characters ready before you ask for help.

Three Cities, Three Days: What the Total Looks Like

The 10 Day Route

Build a 10 day trip around the capital, Xi'an and the eastern metropolis by high speed rail. That gives you three full days in the capital, two in Xi'an, three in the eastern metropolis, and two travel days.

What Each Tier Spends

A shoestring traveller spends roughly CNY 250 to 450 per day. Over 10 days that is CNY 2,500 to 4,500 plus two high speed rail tickets. The capital to Xi'an second class costs roughly CNY 500. Xi'an to the eastern metropolis costs roughly CNY 600. Add those on top. A midrange traveller spends CNY 600 to 1,000 per day, or CNY 6,000 to 10,000 for 10 days plus rail. A comfort traveller spends CNY 1,200 to 2,000 per day, or CNY 12,000 to 20,000 for 10 days plus rail.

Why Xi'an Costs Less

Remember that second tier cities like Xi'an are 20 to 40 percent lower for meals, hotels, taxis and sight admission compared to the capital and the eastern metropolis. Your Xi'an days will cost less than your days in the other two cities.

The common mistake: trying to add Guilin and Chengdu to this route in two weeks. You lose multiple days to trains and transfers. Stick to these three cities.
