The common mistake is to book a hotel in Da Nang and then treat the city as the attraction. It is not. Da Nang works best as a logistics hub, a place to sleep, eat well and recover between trips to places that deliver a stronger payoff in less time. The city has a long beach, a clean riverfront and solid food, but its sprawl and traffic make it harder to enjoy on foot than the compact old towns nearby. The real value of staying here is the ability to run a series of day trips without repacking your suitcase. The question is which ones justify the travel time and which ones leave you wishing you had stayed put.

Da Nang to Hoi an Day Trip

Getting There and Timing

Hoi An is 30 km south of Da Nang. By Grab car it takes 45 minutes and costs 250,000 to 350,000 VND one way. The public Bus 01 takes 60 to 75 minutes and costs 20,000 to 30,000 VND. Leave Da Nang after breakfast, spend the morning walking the Ancient Town, eat lunch along the river, and be back in My Khe for an evening swim. That is a half day.

The downside is that you are shortchanging Hoi An. Spend one full day plus one evening there. The town changes after dark when the lanterns come on and the night market runs from 17:00 to 22:30. A day trip forces you to choose between the daylight heritage sites and the evening atmosphere.

What to Do With One Day

If you have only one day to give, arrive by 08:30. Buy the Ancient Town entry ticket for 120,000 VND. Its 24-hour validity covers 5 of the 22 listed sites. Stay through dinner. Skip the monthly lantern festival on the 14th day of the lunar month unless you are prepared for crowds; it is beautiful but the streets become impassable.

Da Nang to Hue Day Trip

Hue sits 100 km north of Da Nang. The fastest option is a private car through the Hai Van Tunnel, which takes 2 to 2.5 hours and costs 1,200,000 to 1,500,000 VND one way. The train takes 2.5 to 3 hours, costs 70,000 to 90,000 VND for a soft seat or 120,000 to 160,000 VND for a soft sleeper, and runs along the coast. The scenic route via the Hai Van Pass road adds 30 minutes to the drive and requires a driver comfortable with steep mountain gradients.

This is a long day. You lose four to five hours in transit round trip. The payoff is the Hue Imperial City ticket for 200,000 VND and the royal tombs, which cost 420,000 VND for a combined ticket valid for 48 hours covering three tombs. A day trip lets you see either the Citadel or one tomb, not both.

How to Decide

If your priority is scenery rather than ruins, take the Hai Van Pass route and treat the drive as part of the attraction. If your priority is actual sightseeing time, skip Hue as a day trip and spend a night there instead.

Hai Van Pass from Da Nang

The Hai Van Pass is a 21 km mountain road with a summit at 496 m elevation. It connects Da Nang to Lang Co Beach and Hue. As a standalone day trip, the pass itself takes about two to three hours round trip by motorbike or car, including stops at viewpoints. The road is paved but has steep gradients up to 10 percent, and the weather changes rapidly at the summit. Fog and rain can drop visibility to ten metres even when the coast is clear.

The best use of the pass is as the scenic route to Hue, not as a destination on its own. If you drive it separately, combine it with Lang Co Beach at the northern foot, where the lagoon runs 10 km long and the beach stretches another 10 km. The alternative is the Hai Van Tunnel, a 6.28 km bypass that saves 30 minutes but removes the view. Decide based on the weather forecast: clear morning, take the pass; rain forecast, take the tunnel.

Ba Na Hills Day Trip

The Cable Car and the Crowds

Ba Na Hills is 40 km west of Da Nang, a 60-minute drive by taxi or private car costing 400,000 to 500,000 VND one way. The attraction is the cable car, which rises from 23 m at the base station to 1,487 m at the summit over a 5,801 m length, taking 17 to 20 minutes. The entry ticket including the cable car cost 900,000 VND in 2024, and the price is revised annually by the operator. Children between 1 and 1.4 m pay 750,000 VND.

The Golden Bridge sits at 1,414 m, measures 150 m long and opened in 2018. The original French hill station dates to 1919.

The problem is the crowd. Between 09:30 and 15:00 the cable car queue runs 45 to 90 minutes, and the French village theme park at the top feels more like a shopping mall than a mountain escape.

How to Beat the Queues

Arrive at the base station by 07:30 to ride up before the tour buses arrive. Leave by 14:00 to avoid the afternoon queue on the way down. If you dislike theme parks, crowds or ticket prices above 900,000 VND, skip Ba Na Hills entirely.

My Son Sanctuary Day Trip

My Son Sanctuary is 45 km from Da Nang, a 60-minute drive by taxi or tour bus costing 500,000 to 600,000 VND one way. The entry ticket is 150,000 VND. The site covers 142 ha and contains 8 surviving temple groups from an original 70, built between the 4th and 13th centuries CE by the Cham civilisation. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999.

The first tour groups arrive at 08:00 to 08:30. Arrive before 08:00 to walk the ruins in relative quiet. The downside is that My Son is smaller than the photographs suggest. After the morning crowds arrive, the site feels like a construction site with guided groups funneling through the same paths.

Combine it with Hoi An on the same day if you have a car: you are already halfway there. My Son alone as a day trip from Da Nang means two hours of driving for roughly 90 minutes of walking.

Lang Co Beach and Bach Ma National Park

Lang Co Beach

Lang Co Beach is 60 km from Da Nang via the Hai Van Pass, a 1.5 to 2 hour drive. By tunnel it takes 1 to 1.25 hours. A one-way taxi costs 700,000 to 900,000 VND. The beach runs 10 km and the lagoon stretches 10 km by 2 to 3 km wide. The town has a population of roughly 12,000. It is a quiet alternative to the developed coast near Da Nang, but the payoff is modest: a beach is a beach, and Lang Co does not offer anything My Khe does not, except fewer people.

Bach Ma National Park

Bach Ma National Park, also 60 km away, takes 1.5 hours by car with a one-way taxi cost of 800,000 to 1,000,000 VND. The entry ticket is 60,000 VND. The summit sits at 1,450 m and the park covers 22,031 ha. Private cars are not permitted beyond the gate; a shuttle bus covers the 16 km summit road for a return fare of roughly 100,000 VND. The best season is March to September. The hike from the summit road to the waterfalls takes two to three hours. This is a full day with significant driving and physical effort. It suits hikers, not beach travellers.

Marble Mountains and Other Quick Options

Marble Mountains

The Marble Mountains are 9 km from Da Nang, a 20-minute taxi ride costing 120,000 to 180,000 VND one way. The entry ticket is 40,000 VND and the elevator one way costs 15,000 VND. The main hill, Thuy Son, rises 106 m and contains seven main caves. This is the shortest day trip on the list and the only one that fits into a two-hour window before or after other plans.

Son Tra Peninsula

The Son Tra Peninsula loop is 25 to 30 km by motorbike and takes 2 to 3 hours. A motorbike rental costs 120,000 to 180,000 VND per day. The road is paved with steep gradients up to 10 percent. The Lady Buddha at Linh Ung Pagoda stands 67 m tall. The red-shanked douc langur population is estimated at 300 to 700 individuals; the exact figure is published by the Son Tra Nature Reserve.

Cham Islands

The Cham Islands require a 45-minute speedboat from Hoi An and are seasonal, operating mainly in dry weather from February to August. They add a boat crossing and a full day to any itinerary.

Ranking the Day Trips by Travel Time and Payoff

If you have one day, the best single day trip is Hoi An. It has the shortest travel time relative to what you see, and you can return in time for dinner on the Da Nang riverfront.

If your priority is scenery, the best single day trip is Hue via the Hai Van Pass, but only if you accept that half your day is in the car. If your priority is ruins, My Son delivers but feels rushed. If your priority is mountain views, Ba Na Hills delivers only if you beat the crowds. If your priority is a quiet beach and lagoon, Lang Co is fine but not remarkable. If your priority is hiking, Bach Ma National Park requires a full day and good fitness.

The Marble Mountains and Son Tra Peninsula are the only options that do not eat into your buffer day. The Cham Islands are too weather-dependent to plan around unless you have flexibility. A buffer day in Da Nang itself, used for the beach, the food and the Son Tra Peninsula, is often the best day of the trip.

Who Should and Should Not Use Da Nang for Day Trips

Da Nang as a base suits beach and city breakers who want modern comforts, digital nomads needing a liveable hub, food-focused travellers after central Vietnamese seafood and street food, families needing space and pools, and golfers or active travellers who want to move between different terrain without changing hotels.

It does not suit travellers seeking deep heritage or old-town charm. Stay in Hoi An instead. It does not suit backpackers wanting a walkable party district; Da Nang is too spread out. And anyone expecting a quiet fishing village is a decade too late. The coastline is heavily developed.

The day trips from Da Nang work because you can sleep in the same bed for a week and see four different landscapes. But they work only if you accept the travel time and plan around the weather.
