Picking Your Arrival Airport in Shanghai

Shanghai has two international airports, and choosing the wrong one for your flight adds an unnecessary hour to your arrival. Pudong (PVG) handles most long haul international routes. Hongqiao (SHA) handles domestic flights plus a handful of regional connections to Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong and Macau. The distance difference is stark: PVG sits roughly 40 kilometres east of People's Square, while SHA is only 13 kilometres west. Your arrival experience depends almost entirely on which one you land at, and on whether you have a connection between them.

PVG Maglev to Bund: the Fastest Line, but Not a Direct One

The Shanghai Maglev is the headline act at Pudong. It covers the 30 kilometre track from PVG to Longyang Road in about 8 minutes, hitting a top speed of 300 km/h with brief windows reaching 430 km/h during limited morning and afternoon slots. The single ticket costs ¥50, or ¥40 if you show a same day flight ticket. The Maglev runs every 15 to 20 minutes. From PVG to Longyang Road it operates between 07:02 and 21:42; the reverse direction runs from 06:45 to 21:40.

Here is where first timers get confused. The Maglev does not take you into central Shanghai. It drops you at Longyang Road, where you must change to Metro Line 2 to continue west toward the Bund, People's Square, or your hotel. The switch involves walking from the Maglev platform to the Metro concourse, tapping out and tapping in again, and finding the correct direction on Line 2. Allow at least 10 minutes for that. The combined journey from your PVG arrival gate to, say, East Nanjing Road runs roughly 65 minutes on Metro Line 2 after the Maglev, plus the 8 minute Maglev ride itself, plus the change. Total door to Metro exit: about 85 to 90 minutes.

The alternative is a direct Metro Line 2 ride from PVG all the way to People's Square, taking about 65 minutes and costing ¥7. It is slower than the Maglev plus change combo, but simpler because you stay on one train. The last train from PVG departs around 22:30, so if your flight lands late, you will need the taxi.

What The Maglev Costs In Time Versus Money

The Maglev plus Metro combination saves roughly 15 minutes over the direct Metro Line 2 ride, at a cost of ¥40 to ¥50 versus ¥7. For a solo traveller that extra ¥33 to ¥43 buys a small time gain. For two or more travellers, the direct Metro is the better value. The Maglev matters most if you are heading to the Longyang Road area itself, or if you want to skip the crowded Metro through Pudong during peak hours. If your destination is the Bund area, take the direct Metro Line 2 and skip the change.

SHA Metro Line 10 City Centre: Simpler, Faster, Cheaper

Hongqiao Airport is the better arrival experience by a wide margin. Metro Line 10 connects SHA T2 directly to central Shanghai. The ride to Nanjing Road East takes about 35 minutes and costs ¥5. No change. No premium ticket. No confusion about platforms. Metro Line 10 also stops at Yuyuan Garden for the Old City area and at Jiaotong University for the French Concession.

If you arrive at SHA T1, used by Spring Airlines and the airport's small number of regional international flights, you take a short shuttle bus or a covered walkway to T2 to reach the Metro. Add 10 minutes for that connection. It still beats Pudong.

The last train on Line 10 leaves SHA at roughly the same time as other Metro lines, around 22:30 to 23:00. Do not assume 24 hour service. If your flight arrives after that, you take the taxi or the airport bus.

Shanghai Airport Taxi Cost: Budget for the Shift Change Trap

A taxi from PVG to People's Square takes 50 to 70 minutes depending on traffic and costs ¥150 to ¥200 at daytime rates. These are 2026 estimates published by the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission; the actual figure in force when you travel may differ. The same trip from SHA takes 25 to 40 minutes and costs ¥40 to ¥60. That is roughly a quarter of the Pudong cost for half the time.

The trap is shift change. Between 16:00 and 18:00, taxi drivers switch shifts and many refuse fares going to the airport or heading out of their operating area. Hailing a taxi on the street during those hours is near impossible. If you land at PVG between 4 and 6 p.m., queue for the official taxi rank anyway, but budget extra wait time. Your better option during that window is to pre book a ride through a Chinese ride hailing app, which requires Alipay or a local phone number. Without those, you are at the mercy of the rank.

Have your destination written in Chinese characters. Drivers rarely speak English. The taxi rank at both airports is well signed, but you queue first and show the address to the driver on arrival at the front of the line.

Shanghai Airport Transfer Comparison: Which Option for Which Traveller

Choose your transfer based on what you value most. The direct Metro is the best balance of speed, cost and simplicity for most solo travellers arriving at PVG. Take the Maglev only if you are in a hurry, you are heading to the Longyang Road area, or you want the experience itself. The taxi from PVG is for two or more people splitting the fare, for late arrivals after the Metro shuts, or for travellers with heavy luggage who cannot manage the stairs and security checks.

At SHA, the Metro Line 10 wins for almost everyone. The only exceptions are late arrivals, groups of three or more where the taxi cost per person drops below ¥20, and travellers connecting directly to the high speed rail station next to SHA T2. Hongqiao Railway Station sits inside the same transport complex as SHA T2. If you have a high speed train to Suzhou, Hangzhou, Beijing or Nanjing, you can walk directly from your arrival gate to the rail concourse without leaving the complex. Check the minimum connection time carefully. The fact sheet advises a minimum self connection time of 2 hours by road between PVG and SHA, and recommends at least 4 to 5 hours total if you are changing airports.

What The Airport Bus Offers

Airport buses run from both PVG and SHA to multiple city destinations, with fares from ¥2 to ¥30 and travel times from 45 to 90 minutes depending on traffic and route. The bus is the slowest option. Use it only if your hotel is directly on an airport bus line, if the Metro has stopped running, or if your budget is very tight. The buses carry luggage under the coach, so they work for travellers with suitcases, but you must know your stop in advance and tell the driver or conductor in Chinese.
