Mid-Distance Highway Coaches from Tokyo That Beat the Train on Price

Keikyu Highway Buses That Never Touch Haneda

Keikyu runs a network of limousine and highway coaches linking Yokohama, Kawasaki, Shinagawa, and Odaiba to Kisarazu, Hakone, Gotemba, Kawaguchiko, and Karuizawa. None of these routes start or end at Haneda Airport. The single reason to choose one: the bus costs half the Shinkansen fare and eliminates the two or three train transfers the same corridor demands. The trade-off is time. Off-peak, the coach runs 20% to 40% slower than rail. In peak holiday traffic, that gap widens to 90 extra minutes. This page covers every non-airport Keikyu highway bus route, how to book, and when the coach beats the train.

The Routes That Make Sense

Across The Aqua-Line To Kisarazu

The Yokohama to Kisarazu route costs ¥1,500 to ¥2,000 each way and takes 45 to 70 minutes. The Shinagawa to Kisarazu route costs ¥1,800 to ¥2,300 each way and takes 50 to 80 minutes. Both use the Aqua-Line expressway and bypass the rail route that requires a change at Kurihama or Kimitsu. For the Boso Peninsula, this is the direct option.

Fuji Five Lakes Without The Otsuki Transfer

Yokohama to Kawaguchiko costs ¥3,500 to ¥4,500 each way and takes 2 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours. Shinagawa to Kawaguchiko costs ¥3,800 to ¥4,800 each way and takes 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes. The train requires a change at Otsuki onto the Fujikyu Railway line. The bus delivers you directly to Kawaguchiko Station or Fuji-Q Highland. The same logic applies to Hakone and Gotemba. Yokohama to Hakone costs ¥2,000 to ¥2,500 each way, 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. Yokohama to Gotemba costs ¥2,500 to ¥3,000 each way, 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes. Both routes avoid the Odakyu line transfer at Odawara.

Karuizawa And Kawasaki Departures

Yokohama to Karuizawa costs ¥4,000 to ¥5,500 each way, 3 hours to 4 hours 30 minutes. The Shinkansen from Tokyo Station is faster at 70 minutes but costs more and requires you to travel from Yokohama to Tokyo first. The bus is a single seat from Yokohama Station East Exit to Karuizawa Station or the Prince Hotel. Kawasaki to Kawaguchiko costs ¥3,500 to ¥4,500 each way, 2 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours. The bus departs from Kawasaki Station East Exit.

When The Bus Is The Wrong Choice

Skip these buses on Friday evening outbound, Sunday evening return, and during three peak travel periods: Golden Week (29 April to 5 May), Obon (mid-August), and New Year (29 December to 3 January). In those windows, expressway traffic on the Tomei and Shuto Expressway can add 2 hours or more. The train holds its schedule. Also skip the bus if you are travelling between two points on the same rail line without a transfer. The bus is only faster than the train when the rail route requires changes. If the train is a direct service, take the train.

Booking, Boarding and the Fine Print

How To Reserve And Pay

Reservation rules vary by route. Most long-distance routes require an advance reservation. Short routes such as Yokohama to Kisarazu may allow boarding without one. Check before you queue. Book online via highwaybus.com in English or Japan Bus Online. You do not need a Japanese phone number. At the terminal, use the ticket counter or the ticket machine. Cash only. IC cards such as Suica and Pasmo are not accepted for highway bus fares. On-board payment is available on some unreserved routes but carry cash.

Seats, Luggage And What To Expect

Your seat is assigned at booking. The seat number prints on your ticket. At boarding, present a paper ticket or a mobile QR code. The driver checks your name against the manifest on reserved routes. The bus is a high-deck highway coach with an underfloor luggage hold. You are allowed one to two pieces in the hold. Size limit: total dimensions (length plus width plus height) of 200 cm or less, weight 30 kg or less per piece. You do not need to declare large cases. The driver loads and unloads them. Carry-on allowance is one small bag that fits in the overhead rack or under the seat.

Schedules And Timing

First departure of the day is between 06:00 and 07:00. Last departure is between 18:00 and 20:00. Frequency is 4 to 12 departures per day per direction. Off-peak seasons see reduced frequency. The timetable is fixed and does not adjust for flight delays. If your bus departs at 14:00 and your flight lands at 13:30, you will miss it. Book the bus after you have cleared immigration and collected your luggage.

Who This Bus Network Suits and Who Should Skip it

This network suits solo explorers, efficiency nerds, and anyone who values a direct seat over a faster journey with transfers. It suits travellers heading to Fuji Five Lakes, Hakone, or Karuizawa from Yokohama or Shinagawa who do not want to backtrack through Tokyo Station. It does not suit travellers on a tight schedule who need guaranteed arrival times. It does not suit anyone travelling during Golden Week, Obon, or New Year. The single thing that most often goes wrong: booking the wrong departure terminal. Yokohama Station East Exit is not the same as Yokohama Station West Exit. Shinagawa Station West Exit ground level is not the bus terminal for JR Shinagawa. Arrive 15 minutes early and confirm the stop number on your ticket.
