Phuket flights land at an airport in the north of the island, a 45 minute drive from Patong in light traffic. Most travellers underestimate that distance. The airport code is HKT. It handles 16 to 18 million passengers a year. The island has one runway and two terminals. The international terminal is Terminal 1. The domestic terminal is Terminal 2. The covered walkway between them runs roughly 600 to 800 metres. If you arrive on a domestic connection and depart internationally, or the reverse, allow 15 minutes for the transfer. The most frequent direct routes come from within Asia. Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to HKT takes 1 hour 20 minutes. Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and Thai VietJet Air operate this sector. Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) to HKT also takes 1 hour 20 minutes, served by Thai AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air. One way fares from BKK run THB 900 to THB 2,500. From DMK the range is THB 700 to THB 2,200. If you fly into BKK and need to connect at DMK, allow 45 to 90 minutes by road. A free shuttle bus runs between the two airports from 07:00 to 24:00 every 12 to 30 minutes. The airline list is broad, but the split between full service and low cost determines what you get on arrival. Full service carriers such as Thai Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways and British Airways include a checked bag and meal. The airframes serving HKT are mostly wide body on long haul routes. On regional routes the aircraft are narrow body. The domestic market from Bangkok operates a mix of both. Check your itinerary for a terminal change at BKK or DMK. If you buy two separate tickets through Bangkok, the connection is your responsibility, not the airline's.

You clear immigration before you reach baggage claim. In peak season the immigration queue runs 30 to 90 minutes. In green season the wait is 10 to 30 minutes. If you need a visa on arrival, the queue is longer: 45 to 120 minutes in peak season. Have your documents ready before you reach the counter.

After You Clear Immigration

The arrivals hall is one open space after baggage claim. Currency exchange booths are visible immediately. The rate at HKT is worse than what you get at a bank in town. Change only enough to pay for your transport. The major Thai mobile operators AIS and TrueMove have stalls in the arrivals hall. Buy a tourist SIM for roughly THB 300. You get 15 days of unlimited data. 5G coverage across Phuket is excellent. Register the SIM immediately after purchase. The staff at the stall will help. Departure: When to Arrive at HKT

Arrive 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic flight. The departure immigration queue in peak season is 45 to 90 minutes. Security adds another 20 to 40 minutes. The airport has a single runway, so delays cascade fast when one flight misses its slot. There are no lounges significantly better than sitting at the gate. Do not plan to eat a proper meal at the airport. The domestic terminal has the same limited facilities. If you are connecting onto a domestic flight, wait at the gate. The walkway between terminals is uncovered in places. In a rainstorm it is wet and crowded.

Phuket Airport to Patong and Other Beaches

Use a metered taxi for speed and privacy, but know the failure point. There is a metered taxi counter outside arrivals in both terminals. The counter adds a THB 100 surcharge to the meter. A metered taxi to Patong costs THB 800 to 1,000. To Kata and Karon the fare is THB 1,000 to 1,200. To Rawai and Nai Harn the fare is THB 1,200 to 1,500. To Phuket Town the fare is THB 500 to 650. The problem: the taxi mafia is active at HKT arrivals. Metered taxi drivers may refuse to switch on the meter and demand a fixed price of THB 1,000 to 1,500 for Patong. Airports of Thailand and the Phuket Provincial Land Transport Office are supposed to enforce the meter rule. Enforcement is inconsistent. Expect to negotiate or walk to the Grab zone.

Grab, Minibus and the Smart Bus

Grab ride hailing is an alternative. The designated Grab pickup zone is outside arrivals. Fares to Patong run THB 700 to 950. The catch: the local taxi and tuk tuk monopoly in Patong and Kata sometimes blocks Grab pickups, forcing you to walk outside the designated zone. Shared minibus is the budget option. The fare to Patong is THB 180 to 250. To Kata and Karon the fare is THB 200 to 300. To Phuket Town the fare is THB 150 to 200. The minibus waits until every seat is full. You are dropped last if your hotel is the furthest stop. The Airport Smart Bus runs from HKT to Rawai via Phuket Town, Patong, Karon and Kata. The fare to Patong is THB 100. To Rawai it is THB 170. The bus runs once per hour from 06:00 to 21:00. For a solo traveller with a backpack, the Smart Bus works. For anyone with a checked bag and a hotel a 15 minute walk from the main road, the Smart Bus is a false promise. You will stand with a suitcase on the roadside waiting for a connection that never comes, or drag the bag half a kilometre in 30 degree humidity.

Pre-Book a Private Transfer

Pre book a private transfer if you have more than one bag per person. The cost to Patong is THB 700 to 1,100. To Kata and Karon it is THB 900 to 1,300. To Rawai and Nai Harn it is THB 1,100 to 1,600. The driver meets you inside arrivals with a sign. That removes the tout problem at the exit.

Friction Points and What You Should Know Before Landing

Walk past the men holding laminated signs. Go directly to the official transport counter or the Grab pickup zone. The tout is aggressive but manageable. The arrivals hall has only a handful of cafes and shops. Do not plan to eat there. The currency exchange booth rate is poor. Swap THB 1,000 for the taxi and handle the rest at a SuperRich in town. Buy the tourist SIM from AIS or TrueMove for roughly THB 300. It gives you 15 days of unlimited data. This is cheaper than any roaming plan. Register the SIM immediately after purchase.
