Flight time from Haneda is roughly 1 hour 30 minutes. Full service carriers ANA and Japan Airlines operate the bulk of these routes, and non peak one way fares range from ¥10,000 to ¥25,000. The main terminal building is the larger of the two. Your Sapporo flight almost certainly lands here, as Hokkaido routes are overwhelmingly internal. The airport bus stop is directly outside the arrivals lobby on the first floor. Both are clearly signed in English.

The JR Rapid Airport train leaves from the station directly underneath the main building. It reaches Sapporo Station in 37 minutes at the fastest. The basic fare plus unreserved seat costs ¥1,150. A reserved seat in the U-Seat car costs an extra ¥840, which buys you a guaranteed seat and luggage space. Pay it during Snow Festival when every car is standing room only.

The airport bus takes 70 to 80 minutes to reach the Sapporo city center. It costs ¥1,300 and drops at multiple stops including Sapporo Station and the Susukino entertainment district. In January and February when winter weather disrupts train schedules, take the bus. Buses navigate snow covered roads at lower risk of cancellation. Trains sometimes stop running during blizzards. Buses run slower but run.

A taxi to central Sapporo costs between ¥13,000 and ¥17,000 and takes about 60 minutes. Take one only if you are traveling in a group of three or four and splitting the fare, or if you land after the last train around midnight. Taxis become scarce and expensive during snowstorms, so do not rely on one as a backup plan.

Sapporo Airport Train: What You Need to Know Before You Ride

Take the JR Rapid Airport train. It is fast, cheap and direct. It terminates at Sapporo Station, which puts you in the center of the city with access to the subway, the underground shopping labyrinths and the hotel district. The 37 minute travel time is the fastest service; some local trains take longer and stop at more stations. Stick with the rapid train.

Buy your ticket from the vending machines near the JR ticket gates. You can also tap a Kitaca or another IC card like Suica or Pasmo, which are valid on the route. Your card balance must cover the ¥1,150 fare. If you are arriving from Tokyo and already hold a Suica, it works here.

Skip the reserved seat surcharge of ¥840 for the U-Seat outside peak periods. During the Snow Festival and on Friday evenings, pay the extra because unreserved cars fill past capacity and you may stand for the whole ride. The U-Seat car is the last car on the train. CTS Airport Transport: Picking Up Pocket Wi Fi or a SIM Card Before You Leave

Rent pocket Wi Fi at New Chitose Airport rather than picking one up in the city. The rental counters are in the arrivals lobby of both the main and international buildings. The electronics shops on the main building second floor sell SIM cards that are cheaper than downtown options. Buy one before you clear the arrivals area. Once you exit to the train or bus, you lose the chance to compare prices.

Free Wi Fi exists at Sapporo Station and Odori Park via Sapporo City Wi Fi, but it requires re registration every 30 minutes. That is not usable for navigation across a full day. Flights to Hokkaido: Why You Fly Into CTS and Not Anywhere Else

Fly into New Chitose Airport. It is the only practical air entry point for Sapporo and central Hokkaido. The alternative is the shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin Hakodate Hokuto, which takes roughly four hours, followed by a limited express train to Sapporo taking another three and a half hours. Total rail travel time from Tokyo to Sapporo is around seven and a half to eight hours. That is covered by the nationwide Japan Rail Pass, but it is an entire day of transit. Flying is the efficient choice.

ANA and Peach Aviation CTS routes cover the bulk of the internal schedule. If you are arriving from an international city, your Sapporo flight will either connect through Tokyo or operate as a direct regional route from South Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong or Southeast Asia. The international wing is smaller than the main one but handles customs efficiently. Allow 60 to 90 minutes for connection if you are flying in from overseas and need to clear immigration before catching an onward flight.

Airport Food and Amenities Before You Head to the City

Do not rush out of New Chitose Airport without eating. The main building has a dedicated floor called the Hokkaido Ramen Dojo on the third floor, with eight shops including some of the best miso ramen in the prefecture. Above it on the fourth floor is the New Chitose Airport Onsen, a full hot spring facility with an outdoor bath overlooking the runway. Use it if your flight lands early and you want to soak before the train ride in.

The second floor Shopping World sells Hokkaido seafood, dairy sweets and souvenirs. Grab a scallop rice bowl or a soft serve before you board the train. The airport seafood breakfast at one of the market style stalls beats anything you will find at a convenience store. The Doraemon Wakuwaku Sky Park on the third floor is a paid attraction for families, not your priority. One look at the giant blue robot cat is enough.
